May 18 – 21, 2024, the leadership of BRICS WBA South Africa undertook a pivotal bilateral visit to Sierra Leone, aimed at strengthening economic ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation. The delegation, led by Executive Chairperson Ms. Lebogang Zulu, with the support of Deputy Chairperson Ms. Shella Maela and key members of the Trade and Investment Working Group, engaged in a series of high-level discussions that underscored the commitment to advancing shared economic interests. This visit was meticulously organized by Mr. Ahmed Bah, a visionary entrepreneur and leader of Lopi Brothers, whose efforts facilitated impactful engagements with Sierra Leone’s top government officials.

The delegation was received with exceptional hospitality by distinguished leaders, including the Vice President of Sierra Leone, H.E. Mr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone, Dr. Ibrahim Stevens, and various other honorable ministers. The strategic meetings focused on fostering cooperation in critical sectors such as inclusive banking, infrastructure development, and the ambitious project to develop a state-of-the-art SMART city along Port Loko Creek. In addition, the discussions delved into enhancing Sierra Leone’s public transportation network, advancing healthcare infrastructure, and integrating cutting-edge digital solutions, all of which are poised to drive sustainable economic growth and improve the quality of life across the nation.

A significant outcome of this visit is the initiation of the BRICS WBA Sierra Leone Country Centre, which will serve as a cornerstone for ongoing collaboration and strategic partnership. This development marks a key milestone in solidifying the economic relationship between South Africa and Sierra Leone, paving the way for enhanced trade, investment, and mutual growth. The visit not only demonstrated the potential for impactful economic cooperation but also reinforced the shared commitment to creating innovative, inclusive, and sustainable solutions that will benefit both nations for years to come.
