Brazil–South Africa Cooperation on the Horizon
Sugar Production Technology & Rural Farming Cooperatives
During the 2025 BRICS+ Agriculture Investment and Trade Summit, held from 27–29 March at the Durban ICC, a significant dialogue was ignited between Brazil and South Africa — signaling a new era of cooperation in sugar production and rural farming systems.
At the heart of this emerging partnership was Mme Teresa Vendramini, Board Member of the Brazilian Federation of Banks (FEBRABAN) and former President of the Federación de Asociaciones Rurales del Mercosur (FARM). Her presence at the Summit marked a powerful exchange of insight, innovation, and intention to collaborate.

Sugar Production Technology Partnership: Brazil’s advanced agro-industrial sugar manufacturing systems are being explored for technology transfer and adaptation within South Africa — starting with a planned plant in KwaZulu-Natal, inspired by Brazil’s model.
-
Rural Cooperative Model Replication: Building on Brazil’s success with rural farmer associations, discussions are underway to co-develop cooperative-led agricultural ecosystems in South Africa, focusing on sustainability, productivity, and shared wealth creation.
“This is not just an exchange of technologies — it’s an alignment of agricultural futures between Brazil and South Africa,” said Mme Vendramini during her panel remarks.
This cooperation framework will not only strengthen bilateral trade but also empower smallholder farmers and women-led cooperatives with the tools, infrastructure, and finance models that have propelled Brazil’s global leadership in agri-industrialization.
