The current form of farming, namely small-scale farming address the challenges faced by a marginalized individual in a rural community. Projects such as this of Ulala Holdings play a vital role in household food security, dietary diversity, and health. Despite this, women continue to be economically marginalized, and their contributions often go unrecognized. The nature of this project can assist women in farming by fostering higher levels of autonomy through knowledge building, collective action, and commercialization opportunities. Agricultural farming creates spaces for women to become more autonomous and empowered at household and community levels and subsequently through participation in producer groups (locally produced foods). The participation of women in farming is very important and can provide encouraging results as sources of employment and investment.
Furthermore, enhanced breeding of livestock and cultivation practices of crops and fields; result in higher yields and positively affects our food supply and environment. With the growing nature of global warming, crop farming compliments the environment with the release of carbon dioxide and oxygen.

We are piggery and chicken farm based in South Africa, in the Eastern Cape. We also own 21 hectares of land where we currently produce maize, spinach and black seed.
We would like to expand and grow all 3 businesses as follows:
1. The chicken farm:
# We currently have about 100 egg layers. We are looking to have no less than 1000 chickens at any given time. This is to increase production of the eggs layed to be sold.
# We also have 100 broiler chickens which we grow from day old chics and slaughter (in-house), at 5 weeks and sell as whole, cut, deboned, grilled and cooked meat.
The plan and goal for the farm is to have 1500 of these layers at any given time, in order to constantly supply food retailers in and around our area.
2. The piggery:
# We currently have around 30 F1 pigs. The pigs are kept until around 5 months, at 60-70kgs, and then are slaughtered (in-house) to be sold as meat.
The aim for both farms is to ultimately be a fully fledged farm that grows, slaughters and packages our product in-house to distribute to food retailers and supply the pigs to abattoirs.
We therefore need financial assistance to get the farm to where it needs to be to achieve our goal.
All 3 businesses are family run and owned, by my husband and I, and the plan is to have them in our family for generations.

Margaret Molefi has been farming since 1990 and officialised and registered Ulala Holdings in 2016. Ulala Holdings is currently leased with 350 hectares of land for grazing and 200 hectares of land for crop by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. The governmental land is situated approximately 50km from Morokweng in the North West province. The project has various livestock and are as follow: 38 female calves, 18 heifers, 105 cows, two bulls, 2 small bulls (Bonsmara and Brahaman breed). The project are also 65 sheep and 42 goats. Due to lack of adequate infrastructure, the poultry (rainbow chickens) was temporarily on hold. However, there are 29 household chickens and 18 pigs at the farm land for subsistence purposes. Ulala Holdings is a registered members in the National Emergent Red Meat Producers Organisation (NERPO) and its directing efforts to supply red meat to regional slaughterhouses and red meat producers. Reliable ground water is supplied by mean of borehole and fuel-operating generator (though very costly) at project. The water is stored in a man-made zinc dam. Zinc dams are very ideal to further harvest rainwater. Corrugated zinc water dams offer a safe solution that doesn’t release chemicals over time, unlike plastic alternatives. They are also easy to clean and require minimal maintenance due to their durability. Due to lack of infrastructure and resources; the 200 hectares of land for crop is currently not in use but maintained. However, the area is friendly for sunflower seeds, maize, wheat and groundnuts. The North West province produces one-third of the country’s maize, and is therefore a serious aspiration of Ulala Holding to engage in crop farming to engage in market that major crop market that contributes 40% of the nation’s supply. Ulala Holdings recognizes the value of empowering female farmers and has since its inception; cooperated with other local farmers. The project aims to enhance economic inclusion for Black women farmers, including youth and people living with disabilities in local economies.
