The BRICS Africa Film City project represents an ambitious initiative to establish a film city with modern infrastructure for future film production. The project will include the construction of a pavilion for animation, a BRICS pavilion, and a venue for BRICS film festivals and awards, with the long-term goal of becoming a hub for the region’s film industry. Additionally, the project entails the creation of replicas of locations from BRICS countries for filming purposes. The primary objective is to create new employment opportunities in the creative industries, stimulate tourism, reinforce collaboration among film production companies, cultivate partnerships across the entire value chain, and disseminate best practices.
The project is currently in the planning phase. South African representatives from the WBA BRICS creative industries working group intend to participate in a business mission to Russia as part of the BRICS Urban Future Forum in September 2024. The objective of the mission is to facilitate the exchange of best practices in the film and animation industry, as well as to establish strategic partnerships. Furthermore, visits to leading animation studios in Russia are scheduled to gain insight into best practices.
The initiative includes:
– The establishment of a film city in South Africa is to include the construction of a pavilion for animation and a BRICS pavilion.
– The new film city will host BRICS film festivals and awards.
– Forming long-term collaborative partnerships and co-producing films with BRICS countries.
