“Obtaining the status of a BRICS partner for our country allows us to take a significant place in world politics and gain new opportunities to modernize our economy. Opportunities are opening up for Belarus to participate in promoting international socio-economic development, the introduction of social and technological innovations, infrastructure development and scientific and cultural cooperation, as well as political support and participation in global initiatives,” said Tatiana Lugina.
According to the Chairperson of the Belarusian Regional office of the Alliance, “Belarus can gain access to new markets and opportunities for trade with other BRICS member countries. This can contribute to an increase in the export of Belarusian goods and services.
Also, participation in BRICS can attract foreign investment from member countries, which is important for the development of the Belarusian economy, especially in such sectors as industry, agriculture, technology and, of course, light industry.”
She also noted that joining BRICS provides an opportunity to strengthen the Republic’s political ties with partner countries, which contributes to strengthening national and global world security in general.
The BRICS countries can cooperate in joint projects aimed at infrastructure development, which can improve the transport and logistics capabilities of Belarus. Belarus can also take part in the discussion and implementation of global initiatives related to sustainable development, ecology and other current and global issues.
“Of course, participation in BRICS can promote the exchange of knowledge and technology, as well as cultural interaction between countries. However, it is important to note that joining BRICS can also be accompanied by certain challenges, such as the need to adapt to new economic conditions and compete with other participants,” Tatiana Lugina emphasized.
On October 11, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus announced that Belarus had officially become a BRICS partner country. As noted by the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, the letter stating the country’s readiness to join BRICS was signed by President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on November 5, 2024. The document was handed over during a personal meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Maxim Ryzhenkov and the Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov.
