On 31 January 2026, AfriNextGen Magazine, in partnership with the Ngcono Mbowane Foundation, and with the support of BRICS Women’s Business Alliance (WBA) South Africa, hosted a virtual event titled Building Beyond Borders.

Led by the Founder of AfriNextGen Magazine, Shandukani, the event brought together young Africans, thought leaders, and practitioners to engage in critical conversations on leadership, preparedness, and building relevance beyond borders. The gathering focused on the challenges facing African youth, while also highlighting the immense potential that emerges when young people are provided with access, visibility, mentorship, and opportunities on global platforms.

The keynote address was delivered by HRH Princess Lebogang Zulu, the National and Board Chair of BRICS WBA South Africa, who shared a compelling message centred on preparation, courage, and intentional action. She reminded participants that “the future belongs to those who prepare before they depart,” encouraging young people to equip themselves deliberately for the spaces they aspire to enter. Her message challenged attendees to step boldly into rooms that may feel intimidating, to trust in their readiness, and to recognise that they deserve to participate meaningfully in global, transformative conversations.

Discussions throughout the event emphasised that African youth should not be defined by their backgrounds or by the struggles of previous generations. Participants were encouraged to reject inherited limitations, remain forward-focused, and understand that growth and success are forged through discipline, consistency, and resilience. The journey itself — with its lessons, setbacks, and progress — was framed as a vital part of meaningful achievement.

A significant theme that emerged from both the spotlight session and panel discussions was the role of volunteering, presented not as charity, but as a strategic tool for growth and positioning. Speakers highlighted the importance of approaching all work — whether paid or unpaid — with seriousness, intentionality, and responsibility. When undertaken with purpose, volunteering can help young people build skills, enhance visibility, and unlock future local and global opportunities. Participants were encouraged to take ownership of their journeys, clarify their goals, and engage selectively with opportunities that align with their long-term vision.

Across the discussions, a shared reality became evident: while African youth possess immense talent and potential, many continue to face gaps in mentorship, motivation, financial support, and visibility. Speakers stressed the importance of collaboration, peer support, and the effective use of professional platforms such as LinkedIn to access global networks and opportunities. Building the Africa of the future, they noted, requires young people to work together intentionally, leveraging platforms and partnerships to create lasting impact.

The central message of the event was clear and resonant: for African youth to succeed beyond borders, courage must be matched with preparation, and ambition must be grounded in intentional action. Moving beyond visibility toward influence requires discipline, clarity of purpose, and a commitment to building systems that enable ideas to scale and endure.

As one closing sentiment captured powerfully:

Audacity was the name of the game.
